Long bord slaatje
Lula Valletta of HOK Den Haag invited Longboarder and satirical vlogger Jezus Cinco and me to make a duo exhibiton, we both like dutch trashculture, so we came up with the title Long Bord Slaatje. We also made this Shit village video in the village were Jezus comes from. Jezus also made this nice aftermovie of the exhibition opening.

exhibition text by Alfred Valletta:
A pounding beat accentuates the flashing of blood moons filling the distortion-ridden screen. No, this is not the end of Lars von Trier’s Melancholia, but hold your breath you will. Von Trier’s is the planet whose impact will bring the whole earth to an end, while on the other hand it is Jezus Cinco’s video art moons that give him (and us) the power to defeat evil. In addition to creating his own analog variety of glitch art, the Groningen-born artist is known for his longboard vlogs. And now, together with his Rotterdam confrere Rowan van As, Jezus Cinco created the exhibition Long Bord Slaatje especially for HOK. Both artists have a fascination with forgotten visual culture, strange images and dirty salads that can be tasty, nevertheless. Their work creates an interaction between everyday reality and experiencing the American dream.
It was this very American dream fascination that inspired Rowan van As to completely recreate a New York taxi, powered by a lawn mower engine that brings the vehicle to a speed of 20 km per hour. With the Taxi, Van As goes on an adventure in search of small and big stories, which he will make into a film. Andy Warhol’s quote ‘art is about liking things’ is Rowan’s motto. He is a fan of New York and this big apple regularly appears in his work. What he finds inspiring about the city is that it is bombastic, but stylish at the same time, an endless musicality to tune into.
Like Jezus Cinco cutting and splicing old videos, Rowan van As also has a DIY way of working with images that lie dormant in the collective memory. Might be a remarkable logo, a blurry image on an old tv, or whatever catches his eye for the trashy side of the culture during a walk at the market or the Kruiskade in Rotterdam. Rowan loosely remixes these images with an expressive bit of fantasy, resulting in sculptures, drawings, collages, or pieces of clothing.
Well, bring along that salad and let us enjoy it on a long board! All you skaters, longboarders, trash art and New York lovers, you are all invited to this very special duo-exhibition by Jezus Cinco and Rowan van As in HOK.
